The Simnel cake is similar to the Christmas cake only it is made for Easter and particularly common in Great Britain and Ireland, but popular in other parts of the world as well. The cake has its roots in mediaeval times around the 17th century when the servants would bake this cake and bring it home to their mothers during Easter. The cake is not overly sweet, making it the perfect treat during Easter, and other traditions would eat the cake at the end of Lent, which was on Easter Sunday.

The Simnel cake is very similar in taste to that of the Christmas cake, but marzipan is used instead of traditional icing. Traditionally, the cake was made from white flour, butter, eggs, sugar, spices, zest, dried fruits, and candied peels. At Notte’s Bon Ton, we make the cake in the traditional method using whole ingredients and 100 percent butter so that you can taste the tradition as it was meant to be enjoyed. The cake is steeped in tradition and therefore, we strive to keep that tradition alive by using only the finest ingredients and mixing each batch to perfection so that if you order this Easter from us, it will taste the same every Easter thereafter.

One of the things that set Notte’s Bon Ton apart from other bakeshops is that we take our baking very seriously. Nothing makes us happier than to watch the face of someone try our Simnel cake for the first time and have a look of heaven on their face. It makes our hard work and commitment to making cakes and all of our products the old-fashioned way, the way it was meant to be made and eaten. We don’t use inferior ingredients or cheap fillers in order to make the dough stretch; we stick with the traditions of old because that is what makes us stand out from the crowd.
We have customers that come to us from far away distances because they simply cannot find a bakeshop as committed to making it pastries, bread, cookies, and cakes like we are. We enjoy what we do and our pastry chefs are the best of the best and take pride in making traditional recipes such as the Simnel cake.

When you come to Notte’s Bon Ton, you are entering a bakeshop that is steeped in traditional artesian methods of baking that will not settle for anything but the finest ingredients. This is why when you want the Simnel cake, look no further than us because we make it the way it was meant to be enjoyed, a cake with a long history and we have the recipe and continue to make it the same way each and every time.
